The City of Monmouth was founded in 1856 and has been providing quality public services for more than 150 years. Monmouth is a city of 9,640 (December 2015) residents and has its own electric distribution system. The city is located 20 minutes west of Salem, the state capitol. The Pacific Ocean and Cascade Mountains are an hour’s drive from the city.
Monmouth’s educational opportunities rank as one of the highest in the state. Monmouth is home to Western Oregon University (WOU), a 4-year institution of higher education, offering a variety of degree programs to more than 5,000 students. The beautiful campus boasts the distinction of having one of the largest Christmas trees in the United States. Established in 1856, the University has had several names throughout the years and is currently the oldest public university in Oregon and on the West Coast.
Monmouth is located west of the City of Independence and east of the City of Dallas.
